April in Mid-Missouri is an interesting and active time. The birds are out singing, we have lots of sparrows, red cardinals, woodpeckers and robins. They are all busy building nests in the birdhouse and trees. The spring flowers are coming up in the lower flower beds. The hickory tree, redbud trees and the cherry tree are starting to bud. The grass is turning green and the patches of clover are coming to life and in bloom. We have beautiful blue skies and have even had a few days of rain to make these flowers grow. Marty cleaned out around my hazel nut bushes. We ordered these from the MO Conservation George White Nursery in Licking, MO. They are doing real well, they are 2 years old now. We have many squirrels that leap from branch to branch in our oak trees and the lake in our neighborhood sparkles like diamonds in the bright sunshine. My injury is still giving me fits, but with the daily help of my family, I am learning to get along with my disability. It's so nice to get out and walk around from the rebuds to the strawberry patch, down by the modified clothesline to the lower flower bed. It soothes my soul. In the evenings, the tree frogs are always singing. We're all alive and as well as can be expected, here where the back way begins. My family has traveled together all our lives, we enjoy out West tremendously. Northern New Mexico is my favorite destination when I'm not here in Missouri. Now my children are getting older and getting on with their own lives, but they, too, have a traveling bone. Hope you get to get out and enjoy the wonderful outdoors. We always enjoy hearing from you. Stay tuned for our next adventures and come travel the back way with us again soon.

Light rain as my Darlin' headed out about 8:30 to go towards Hermitage to pass out JCAD brochures. He's not feeling well, going to see what kind of run he can do. He had lots of new brochures printed this morning, I folded them and Marty got them loaded in the Toy. He got to stop at the State Park. He wrote that he had light rain and steady traffic moving good all the way to Wheatland and Weaubleau. Darlin' stopped to visit with Poor Girls and on down to Hermitage and stopped at all the stores around and got to say Hi at Victorian Rose. He passed out all the brochures and had a good run. Glad to have him out traveling the back way. I miss it terribly, hope to see all of ya'll soon!

Dark clouds out and thunder rolling as my Darlin' headed out on Hwy 52 towards Versailles. Got to stop and see Roberta in her shop. It always smells good in her shop, she is always cooking when we go there. Taking the back way to California to stop at Burgers Smokehouse and get some jerky. Oh no! It's Saturday and they are closed! Now that's sad! It's raining hard and the water is getting deep on the road. I'm typing from Darlin's notes and from his story. He stopped for a minute and a gentleman stopped to tell him that his fog lights were on. It's the only way to be seen in this downpour. He wrote this as he was stopped at a cemetery at Hwy 5 and Hwy HH. It's not the first time rain and hard downpours have turned us back home from California! It probably won't be the last, either! Have a safe trip on these MO back ways! NEVER cross running water across the road. It can fool ya! Wait awhile or head for higher ground. We've had many a flash flood with all the rain we've been getting. Always play it safe!

Beautiful Monday out as we heat East on Hwy 54. The trees all have new leaves! Wildflowers are in bloom all over! The sun shining on the dogwoods just makes the blooms glow bright white. Just getting to the community of Hickory Hill. We have a nice blue sky with a few wispy clouds. The limestone bluffs are beautiful. Many cows in a pasture on the right are out enjoying grazing on the cool new grass. We just crossed Neighorn Creek and it's gone down and almost clear. The mayapples are open all along the creek banks. Heading towards the City of Jefferson. I think it's a pretty city, the street names will drive you crazy as the street name changes with each block, it seems like. But all the trees and terraced hills are pretty to look at. It looks all different around the Capital now with all the extra security. We got off on Ellis Blvd. and turned left at the light, onto Southwest Blvd. You can see the capital dome off on the right. Lots of traffic out today. The red leaf maples are gorgeous on the left. A man in a straw hat is out mowing his yard on the left and the fresh cut grass smells so good. See a snowflake bush in bloom on the left. Wondering what that is? Made up the name as the flowers are too small for a snowball bush! ha! Anyhow, it sure is pretty and white and full of blooms! Quite the hill to stop at Stadium and SW Blvd. Folks just have to get real close behind you, that's always fun in a 4-speed ride. There's a huge patch of iris' along a driveway on the right. They are all in bud right now, they will be beautiful in a day or two. Mostly medical offices down this road. We have Bag of Burgers or Burger Stop on our right as we turn left onto Missouri Blvd. There's a new grocery store under construction and it's coming along quickly. On down Hwy 63 North towards Columbia. Crossed Turkey creek, it was low and moving slow, the next creek we crossed was Cedar Creek and it was flooded and chocolate brown and moving swiftly. We had scattered showers a few day ago. Took a nice stop at the roadside park, had to get out and walk around as it's a painful ride with my injury. Fixed us up our JCAD lunch of BBQ hickory smoked hot-dog from last night. Fixed our cup with ice and soda, chips and had ginger snap cookies for dessert. Off we go, took a left and drove out by the airport to enjoy our meal, they have a neat mural of an airplane on one hanger. I had to take a picture. On up to Columbia for Doctor visits for us both. Wish us luck! On the way home, we stopped at our favorite Pierpont store for gasoline and to leave JCAD brochures. We even found a lovely greenhouse at Strawberry Fields Farm. So many greenhouses, all the plants are absolutely beautiful, thousands of flowers, vegetables and herbs. Wonderful prices and really nice folks, thanks for letting us leave JCAD brochures. Hope you get out and enjoy traveling the back way with us through Missouri. Come ride with us again soon!
