5/8/00 Big clouds and hazy down by the Osage River as we head West on Hwy 54. Amazing to see a mountain on left turn into little piles of gravel..but it sure did. Rock quarry can make these mountains disappear pretty quick. Loaded with lots of JCAD brochures. We're heading towards Buffalo and Bolivar, Missouri today. So sorry to hear of the extensive flooding in the Union and Washington, MO areas. They had 15 inches of rain Saturday night with massive flooding. Our sympathy goes out to all that were flooded and especially to the families of the 2 people that died. These things happen so quickly and unexpected. Stopped by to see the friendly folks at Bank Star One. Blue sky and sunshine as we near Macks Creek, population 272, on Hwy 54 West. The blackberry bushes are in full bloom on both sides of the road. Should be a good crop this year! Everything is so pretty and green. Macks Creek sign says Auction Every Friday at 7 PM. Will have to come back. Audioloft Recording Studio shines white off to the right. Roadside park 1/2 mile ahead. At the Hwy 73 junction, we stopped and left brochures at the convenience store. I told 'em they were hot off the presses and the lady said, "yes, they still feel warm" and they were! Now, that's current information! We aren't kidding, Darlin' printed these early this morning, I folded 'em while I drank my morning coffee and our son, Marty boxed them up and we're ready to go! We're hitting all the motels down Hwy 54 today. Stopped at both the convenience stores, cafe and motel in Preston, MO. Refilled the glass of tea and off we go on down Hwy 54 West towards Hermitage, population 512. So many places have had a spring makeover! New siding, new paint, looks nice! Crossed Pommme de Terre river and you're into town. Stopped at Victorian Rose and Marie's Flea Market and left JCAD brochures. Nice places, tell 'em JCAD sent ya. Thanks! The Hicomo roadside park is on the right. Into Wheatland, population 363. Crossed the Little Weableau and then the Weableau Creek. Into the town of Weableau, population 436. Left JCAD brochures at all the stores in town, ABC Shop, Freda's and the nice folks at Poor Girls Antiques. See the sign for Collins, MO, population 141. We turned right at Hwy 13 North to take brochures up to Trade Fair Mall. Got to meet a customer, Raymond, and he showed us salt and pepper shakers with glass insert tops. Have never seen those before! Hope he reads this! On down 13 South to see lots of new baby calves on the right. All the ponds are full and sparkling blue in the sunshine. Left JCAD brochures at all the restaurants. Crossed Panther Creek, it's full and muddy and moving slow. Entering Polk County, lots of traffic on Hwy 13, big trucks, cars, RV's, motorcycles, what a variety! Ox eye daisies and butterflies, even June bugs in May! Folks on right have horses hooked up to plow the garden, one patch is done. Darlin' showed me gravel pit on the left, we've never noticed that before. See 5 brown horses standing together under a shade tree. Off we go traveling into Bolivar. Had a GREAT visit with Larry and Sharon at Country Classics Antique Mall. Met Joy, a dealer and basket maker. Glad to have her back in Missouri! Wonderful update, cold Root Beer! Thanks! Be sure to come help these fine folks celebrate their 2nd Anniversary! Their store is an inspiration to us all! Headed out Hwy D out of Bolivar, crossed Pomme De Terre River. Whispy white clouds, field look dry here. Into Huron, waved at the mail lady as she delivered the mail and admired a HUGE weeping willow tree on the right. Turned around and took Hwy C, it's taking us just North of Buffalo. Into Goodson, new church addition on left. Lots of wheat fields, family farms and beef cattle. One lane bridge, crossed a clear little creek, it's a new back way for us. Beautiful horses on left, sleek black ones and white one with tiny black spots. Texas Longhorn cattle, too. Entering Dallas County and crossed Lindley Creek. Gusty winds and curvy roads. Farm of llama's on right, bumpy road ended at Hwy 65. Turned right and headed for Buffalo, population, 2414. Into town to stop at the Victorian Steakhouse for another excellent meal. If you're coming to town, come hungry and come here. Everything we've had has been excellent. If you leave hungry, it's your own fault! On down the road to have a GREAT visit with Nancy at Polly's Flea Market Mall. Nancy is always a pleasure to visit with. She's so excited to be on the web and meeting folks and new customers from all over the world! Thanks so much for the wonderful quote. We'll use it in our next newsletter. This store has changed so much! Evolving into great rooms of furniture, unique items and now an outside flea market every Saturday! You go Nancy! We're so PROUD of you! Yes, we've given away all the brochures, met so many nice folks and now we're heading the Toyota the back way home. See ya! 5/12/00 Cloudy and hazy out as we head West to Osage Beach. Picked up the mail and stopped by the bank and headed out of town down Hwy 42. Stopped by Osage Beach Flea Market to give Don and Mickey Mouse more JCAD brochures. Short visit, but we're on a mission! On down to the Osage Trading Company. This new store is looking great! It's at Brumley, MO at 2065 Hwy 42. Tell Karen we sent you please. We'd love to sign up this store. On down to Iberia, MO to pass out brochures at all 3 antique stores. Stayed on 42 East going to Vienna. Crossed the Little Tavern Creek, it was clear and looking good. Everything is so GREEN out. Stopped at Brunes Country Store and left brochures. Turned left, staying on Hwy 42. Nice places, everyone is out mowing today. Crossed the Little Maries River and Fly Creek and into the town of Vienna, population 611. Stopped by Carroll's Antiques. Sorry to hear Jesse hurt his knee. On downtown to the Auction House, it was closed. Stopped by a new store, A Buck and a Bit. How wonderful to see their URL on their van! Stop by and visit and let 'em know you found them in JCAD. Thanks! I can tell them all day what we can do for them, but ya'll as customers, speak a lot louder than me! I'd love to have ALL the GREAT stores listed with us. JCAD, a growing family. We'll surely stop in again. On down the road and crossed the beautiful Gasconade River. The Indian Ford campground and canoe rental is in Full swing! Driving along and Darlin' hit the brakes! What was that?? Turned around and went back. It was Grandma's Flea Market on the right! Brand new building, very nice lady (She's a GREAT Grandma, too!) Her shop, her collections over the years and lots of love and care have gone into this place. Don't miss it! We will certainly be back soon. Something for everyone! Nice, clean, well lit and great items! She's at 12267 Hwy 42 East. On down the road and see a little black snake in the road belly up. Is it gonna rain? Wonderful ride, left, right, left, right, corners everywhere and going down into the beautiful community of Paydown. I got a brochure for Vienna and learned that the mansion is the old Bray Mansion. This is one of our favorite places as the view is magnificent. Crossed Mill Creek and see a little log cabin on the right and a lady out weed eating, lots of woods, water and hills and not many folks. My kind of place. Came to Hwy 28 and turned left, heading towards Belle, population 1218. It's 82 degrees at 2:04 PM, that's what the bank says! This town has grown so much in the last few months! Wonderful! Stayed East on Hwy 28 into Osage County. Into the town of Bland, population 641. Everything is called Richard P Silver Dick Bland. Missing out on history here. Not sure who he is. If you know, please e-mail me information. Thanks! Traffic picking up, on into Owensville, population 2,325. Left JCAD brochures at the Flea Market and the Antique store. Have been talking to these folks for years. Would love to have them in JCAD. Appreciate them passing out our brochures to their customers. On up Hwy 28 to the town of Rosebud. It's a little out of the way, but many stores there. How sad! Oh my! One, two, three, no, 4 antique stores are closed and for sale! I told 'em they needed to let us make them a web page! Passed out a total of 3 brochures to folks in town, the last antique lady laughed when I told her she should get on JCAD. Up to Hwy 50 West to Drake, MO. Lots of ox eye daisies along the roadside and birds are singing, a nice day out. Huge black cast iron bell on the left and big black Simmetaul bulls, we've never seen black ones before. Large pond and 2 guys out fishing in their jon boat, "Winds out of the South, hook blows in their mouth", so it should be a good day for fishing! The sky is starting to look strange, hard to describe, lots of clouds rushing together and changing quickly. Stopped at Swiss Sausage and left brochures and Darlin' and I got a sample of Cajun sausage and bought a pack of jerky. Ate it all the way to Hermann. Hit the spot! Looks like rain, hope not a dozen inches again this weekend! New grape vines on the right. Great wine making country! Darlin' stopped to cover our work box to keep it dry. Big raindrops coming down fast! On into Hermann, and got to visit with many of the local stores and leave information about JCAD. Also got to yell Hey Pete, as Pete was locking his door. He sure is quick! Ended up calling him at home, nice visit. Over to Community Copy Center to get great deals from Stephen on paper for our JCAD brochures! Great new colors, always nice to visit and learn here. Out to Frank Tucker's place to leave info and nice to see his garden going this year. The peony bushes are beautiful fat white blooms that smell so good in the cemetery next door! On down to visit with a new store just opened beside the Loutre Market. Good luck, you have great stuff and wonderful location. We'll be back! Too tired to eat or we won't make it home awake, so instead of a meal, we snacked on fruits and had chocolate milk. Long ways home, beautiful views traveling the back way. Be safe out there! We all want to make it home. See ya soon! 5/19/00 So nice to be out and about again. Some kind of flu bug bit me early Mother's Day and has been giving me fits all week. It bit us all, my dear Darlin' is doing better today and Marty is well now. So Marty and I are off on Hwy 54 E to Hwy 87. Turned left and headed for downtown Eldon. Many nice homes with beautiful flowerbeds on the right. Funeral home on left has added new remodeling, place looks nice. Have the newly remodeled Meals on Wheels on this road also. So glad to see this service grow for our Senior Citizens. Turned left on Maple Street and headed down to visit with Dan at Trade N Place. His store is wonderful as always. Introduced Marty, my son and photographer today and we got busy. NEWS FLASH! Now there are 2 days of "jamming at Trade N Place", now it's Thursday and Saturday afternoons! Bluegrass pickin' and grinnin', so come on down and tap your feet. Please tell 'em JCAD sent ya! Met a dealer, Mary, while she was working her booth. It was a pleasure to visit with her. Got a good update, great photo's and gave everyone a brochure! On up the street to Maple Street Emporium to have a GREAT visit with Randy. This store is always changing, seems like on a daily basis. Lots of quality used furniture and that hard to find item. Come see the unique Railroad Station and town in his main showcase. Wonderful display cases, hutch and buffet. Even a used computer system that would be good for beginners. Always a pleasure to visit with Randy and get a good update. He's also a Boy Scout leader. Have fun camping this weekend with your troop! These cloudy, cool days will be ideal for camping! Have fun! Marty and I stopped by the Eldon Library to leave JCAD brochures and check out new books. So HAPPY to see 5 new Gateway Computers in their boxes, just waiting to be installed. Come on down, use your library card to get online and come see our Joe and Cathy's Antique Directory! Who knows?? You might just end up in the back way! Lots of traffic out heading West towards Lake of the Ozaarks. Have a safe trip, have fun, we're happy to see you! Back home for more Darlin' and Marty networking classes. Since 1982, we've had 8 different computers, going crazy to get them to do what we wanted. Now we have 2! Are we nuts or what?? ha ha It'll be GREAT soon! It's always a learning experience as JCAD grows with the new century! 5/20/00 Beautiful blue sky and big fluffy white and gray clouds as we head East on Hwy 54. Took Hwy 87 North thru Eldon. All the wheat fields are ready to cut. First hay! Ponds are mighty low as we head into Moniteau County. Healthy cows in red, black and tan are up to their bellies in the new grass. They seem happy! Lots of ground birds fly up as we drive by. Dropped off JCAD brochures at High Point. On into the town on California, population 3,436 to ride around town and wash our truck at the car wash. Heard and saw the train go by. It's been a long time since we've heard a train whistle! While in town, we visited and left brochures at Recollectibles, Rover Flea Market and over to a new store to meet Stephen at Knothole Antiques! Nice stuff, we'll be back! Stopped for lunch at the local restaurant, hate to say, but both our tea glasses were soapy and food on my plate when I left. On down Hwy 50 W to Hwy H. Take a right on H into Clarksburg, population 358. Into Cooper County. At the stop sign, turn right to stay on Hwy H. This road looks like a patchwork quilt. Watch out for the O Hwy junction. Take a left on Hwy O. We're on top of a hill, you can really see for miles. What a pretty valley with lots of trees. How nice to be out in the country! Left on J Hwy, see lots of new corn about 6 inches tall. Fields of beans, soybeans? The dirt looks deep and black. I'm jealous. All my garden is in containers--it's doing well, tho! Nice place on the right, see white diapers hanging on the clothesline. Take a right onto Hwy B. Across from the Lone Elm Store is one of the prettiest gardens we've seen so far. It's on your right. Hang a left on Hwy F and headed towards Speed. New back way for us! Beautiful dark red roses, boy they smell good! Corn out the yang-yang. Crossed Speed Creek and Bethel Ame Creek, see the Lil Andy monster truck! What nice gardens, a nice community. On down Hwy F, black snake, black was up. What a beautiful valley on the left. Magpies fly from the fence as we drive by. Came to Hwy 5 and turned right, sign says 9 miles to Boonville. Down to have a good visit with Stephanie at Hy Way 5 Antique Mall. Even got to meet her daughter, Cassie, who HAS been online to see their web page! Maybe we'll get this generation! Got some great pictures, met some neat folks and as always, enjoyed the items in their store! Down two buildings to meet Art at Buffalo Trails Antiques. Newest store in town, stop by and tell 'em JCAD sent ya! On down town to another new store. This is Finally Yours 2nd Hand, it's at 318 Main. Stop in and visit with Christy and look at all the goodies they have, I didn't have time for a long visit! We'd love to have this listed in JCAD! Nice to meet you Christy! I told you this would end up in The Back Way! Crossed the bridge over the Missouri River taking Hwy 40 to Hwy 5 North towards New Franklin. Crossed Sulphur Creek and in to New Franklin, population, 1,107. Got to stop and leave JCAD brochures at the antique store by the bank. Crossed the Booneslick Bridge on Hwy 5 South. Stopped at the Russell Stover Candy Outlet to buy chocolate lovers dreams and leave JCAD brochures by the registry and free samples. What can be better?? ha! We have seen some beautiful birds today, red wind blackbirds, finches and heard many song birds. Unusual, but we came home the same route. On Hwy 87 before you get to Eldon, slow down to enjoy the beautiful flower beds. It's amazing, these dips in the road, you can hide a semi-truck, tractor, horses or cows in! It can fool your eye! Beautiful sunshine today. Have enjoyed all the colorful hanging baskets, gardens and flowerbeds today. The temperature is in the 70's, cool breeze, low humidity, it's the Ozarks at it's best! We hope you come travel with us again soon. 5/28/00 Beautiful out as we head West on Hwy 54. Got our hanging basket of flowers and veggies to take to Green Mountain Cemetery in Wright County, Missouri. Stopped at the Sugar Bear Flea Market next door to Wards Auction in Linn Creek and bought some flags for the cemetery and one big one for our home. Saw a beautiful doe down by the creek. So nice to have Marty along on this Back Way. You could not have picked a better day! Cool breeze, 70's, baby blue sky and green, green, green! My Darlin' stopped at Canary Lane PVT SE for me to get my writing book from behind the seat. I gotta write! This is a personal back way, not work. Only a few folks at the stores along the way got a JCAD brochure. The birds are singing to us as we cross the bridge and head up the creek and into Richland, population 1,922. Stopped at the Casey's for 3 wonderful brownies and left brochures. On down Hwy 133 into Laclede County. New stuff: new road, new bridge, this new highway is NICE! Over the beautiful Gasconade River, riding in style, how nice. Took a left on AB Hwy, it's also Route 66, turned right at the first dirt road. Oh my, a house we watched being remodeled has burned. We used this road every day for 30 days when we moved to the Lake of the Ozarks from Elk Creek. Stopped at the barn on the left to take pictures of this strange tree with huge roots on the ground. We have admired this tree and barn for a long time. The Gasconade Hills campground is full of happy campers! Saw a Toyota T100, had to stop and take a picture. See folks in tubes and one kayak having fun on the Gasconade River, yes, it's one of my favorite rivers in Missouri. Been fishing and swimming in it for over 20 years! Turn left onto the dirt road into Brownfield, the Minnie Mart is closed. The pine trees sure have grown. My goodness, everything here is so dry! On down to Falcon, MO and we turn right beside the Post Office. Down the road we go! Came through a HUGE patch of butterflies! How neat! See turtles crossing the road, had to stop for refills in our cups. Nice guy and two little boys stopped to see if we needed help. Thanks so much! See a sign, slow, children playing! Crossed a creek bed, cold and clear water! Going straight up! What a climb! From our house to Green Mountain is over 600' in elevation. We're at 600' and Green Mountain is over 1200'. At the end of Vintage Road turn left. Smells so good! Wild roses are everywhere! Blackberries in bloom, too! At the stop sign, Jct AF and O, stop, look both ways and stay on AF. Things sure have changed since we were here. The white cows on the right are hidden in the tall grass, they look like mushrooms in the field. At the stop sign, go forward to get onto Hwy 95 South. Gaddis Store is for sale. Another T100 at Evening Shade. Into Manes and R & J's Cafe is on the left and the school is on the right. We had our first Sullens' reunion at that Manes school years ago. See the sign for the Manes Music Makers. Lots of bluegrass musicians out in these woods. Hang onto your hat, gusty winds. How beautiful the mountains are on the right, so green and lush. Yes, we've arrived at Green Mountain. Stopped at the cemetery and put out our basket of begonias, petunia's, Swedish ivy, 2 onion starts and Black Seeded Simpson lettuce. The 'Ol Man's favorites! How we miss them all so! Took many pictures and hoping more family members would show up to visit with. Put flags at Don and Fred's gravesites. Re-arranged flowers and pulled weeds and spruced up the place. Too many family members here. You cannot buy a cemetery plot, it's first come, first serve. Only cemetery I know of that is still that way. They sure keep it up nice, too! Down Hwy JJ to Rayborn Road. Darlin's Grandpa use to use a team of horses and a wagon and go from Manes to Rayborn doing freight deliveries during the early 1900's. Rayborn Road runs into Hwy 38 and we stopped to take pictures of the old Rayborn Store. It won't be standing much longer. Across the road is a creek where the Sullens' family held family reunions many, many years ago. They would all arrive and visit for a few days, kids played in the creek, folks got to visit, talk about relatives gone, kiss the new babies! They would cut blocks of ice from the river in the winter and store in sawdust in a cave just down the road. When they had their reunion, they would use horses to bring the ice and use it to make homemade ice cream! YES! My kind of folks! On down the road to Hopkins Cemetery. The sign marker helps find it as it's hidden from view. Mcarer and Mary Sullens are buried here. On down to Hwy E. Coon Creek Baptist Church, miss you Aunt Eliza Nevada Robson! You'd be proud, your home looks lovely and has a new front porch to enjoy the view! So dry here, only thing blooming is snake root galore! Heading for the place of our marriage! New bank on left, into Hartville, MO, population 539. Marty took some pictures of Darlin' and myself in front of the church we were married in on February 27, 1978. My goodness! We have traveled the back way quite some time now and I enjoy it more everyday! Thanks Darlin' and Marty Tate for a wonderful day! Lots of new memories on this Memorial Day! |
