Cloudy and warm out as we head West on Hwy 54. Went through Lake Ozark, population 1,142. The Osage River is still extremely full, Ameren UE has been running 3 flood gates wide open for 2 weeks now. Must be good fishing as the banks are lined with folks. At Linn Creek, the earth is moving, and I mean literally. The big dozers are taking down the mountains and making new roads for us. We sure need them. Turned Left onto Hwy 5 South. Stopped at Daylight Donuts, gave away a few brochures and away we go! We have a lane closed at Decaturville. Lots of road work. Many pretty horses in the fields as we enter Laclede County. Stopped at Country Spice, a new store along the highway. Had a nice visit with Shirley and left JCAD brochures. On down to do an update at Annie's Flea Market. Great store, be prepared to pet the cat! ha ha On down to pass out brochures at other stores in Lebanon. Drove on down to hit I-44 West and head towards Conway. Exit 123 to a new store, Historic Route 66 Mall. Met the owner's Dad, Bob. Left info about JCAD and will be back soon to meet the owner, Linda. Took a dirt road Nexus Rd. to Hwy C. Real nice road. Made it to Phillipsburg, population 170. Had a great visit with Doc Holiday and admired his garden, as always! New store opening up at Junctions of C and CC called O & D Restorations. Nice furniture from China. On down to Conway and visit with Denise at Old Time Antiques and Collectables. Heading back home and found a sign for another new store. This one is located on a beautiful farm. Bear Thicket Antiques is the name and Larry is the owner. Stop by and say hi and tell him you traveled "The Back Way" to see him!

Getting started later in the day, handing out brochures to everyone we meet! Ended up riding on a dirt road that came out onto Hwy 54-65. Saw two beautiful deer eating calmly beside the road. Must be the day for animals. Saw squirrels, a raccoon and several cats and even some turtles! Just as it was getting dark, Darlin' stopped the truck and turned it off. The trees all around us were blinking! Hundreds of lightning bugs on the ground, in the air and even up in the trees. What a sight to see! Most beautiful! Stayed and watched for several minutes. Always GREAT to travel the back way! You never know what you'll see next! Get out and see for yourself and have a good time!

Sunny and 90's as we head West on Hwy 54. Funny looking sky, bright blue with swirls of white clouds, all with dark blue bottoms. Drove through the new detour at Linn Creek. Turned left at the light onto Hwy A. When you come to the Junction of highways A and E, stay left on Hwy A. This road is always a nice ride, no matter what the season! Down to Richland to visit with Katherine and Elmer at Fleas R Us. Got an update and new pictures. Always a pleasure to visit here. Headed back on Hwy 7 to Hwy A and came by the George School. Can see a huge thunderstorm off ahead of us. Can see the rain in the distance and lightning in the sky. Stopped at an old farmhouse and cut a few wild pink roses growing in the ditch beside the driveway. Sure do smell good! Now, it's raining like crazy in patches. Looks unusual to see the steam coming off the pavement ahead of us. Entering into Miller County and the whole sky is different shades of pink! People are out in their yards admiring the sky, too. So, today, the back way home is under bright pink skies! Enjoy!

Beautiful sunshine and 90's again as we head West on Hwy 54. Wonderful Darlin' had the power washer out and got the "toy" cooled off and shiny red. Wave at us when you see the URL on the tailgate of our truck! www.lakeozarks.net/~jcad We'd love to know you saw us! Lot's of RV's and vehicles pulling boats. We went across the toll bridge. We always try to stop on the bridge and watch the boats go by. While sitting here 1/2 way across the bridge, all of a sudden the Toyota started bouncing around, like the waves breaking below us on the lake. Is it the wind? Felt freaky! You sure can see a long ways! Stayed about 15 minutes taking in the sites! Paid our toll and gave the attendant a JCAD brochure! Lots of traffic as we head down Hwy F to get to Hwy 5. Stopped at Josh's Antiques and again met Kelly Wilcox, Shorty's son. Did not know that Shorty passed away in December. John's recovering from Dr's, too. Sure did miss seeing them in their store. Their store name, "Josh's" came from the "Jo in John" and "Sh in Shorty". Their store is wonderful as always. Our sincere sympathy to the family. On down South Hwy 5 to distribute brochures to all the convenience stores and stopped at Greenview Auction Center and met the owners, Mick and Katie. Nice place, auction every Saturday night! On to the West side to visit and deliver brochures. Stopped at Troutdale Farm to calm ourselves down and feed the fishes. You can catch trout, picnic or feed the fish. Always fun to come here. Loren was there, so sad to hear that his Mom had passed away in December, also. The West Side of the lake lost 2 longtime residents that will be truly missed. A sad back way home today.

Hazy blue sky as we head West on 54. Scared to look at the thermometer, we're melting down as it is and the air conditioner feels good in the toy! A man on the CB says it's raining like crazy on D Road. Dry here, but pouring rain as we get to Blue Spring Creek bridge. We could see it coming. Will stop at the bank and put the JCAD work box in the big plastic bag. At Business 54/West 54 light, the sun is shining and no rain. It was a nice cool shower. Not taking any chances of the brochures in the JCAD box getting wet, so I covered the box anyhow. Much cooler after the rain. Smells good, too. Now it's only 85 degrees at 2:30 p.m. Turned East onto Hwy 42 and blue sky ahead. Drove through Brumley, population 81. Crossed the twin bridges, Spring Creek and Barren Fork. Guy on tractor is taking new bales of hay to the barn. Can see the white water tower of Iberia, it jumps out at ya when you go over this one ridge a long ways before you get to town. Turned right, South onto Hwy 17. Beautiful flowers along the road, sweet peas, roses, daisies, and huge clumps of wild lilies. Through Crocker, population 1,077. Saw a family busy building a shed on the left. Some working, some supervising from a chair in the shade! HUGE limestone bluff at the Gasconade River. So pretty to see! Waynesville, population 3,207. The river runs along the road. Many twists and turns, great road to drive. Left brochures at Cornucopia Restaurant and Epicure Shoppe. Wonderful store with outside tables, too. Also met Ursula at the Paradise Delicatessen. Smells of wonderful German food, here. Left brochures for her to give to her customers. On down to the pass our brochures at the Subway next to Scently Sweet Candles. We wish her luck as she travels "The Back Way".

Nice big cloud overhead while Darlin' washes the toy before we head out. Wish we would get rain. Lots of traffic out. Hood's discount store is flying their blimp balloon right over Hwy 54 West. Blue sky and pretty, big fluffy clouds. The Osage River is going down. The flood gates are finally closed. Tiny sprinkles of rain on us by the river. Just enough to get the truck wet. People seem to be enjoying the new turning lane on Business 54 towards Bagnell Dam. It sure was needed. The lake is beautiful as we cross the Grand Glaize bridge. The Elks Lodge No. 2517 is looking good with the flags flying. Down Hwy A again, and pass the Missouri Trap Shooters Association Home ground, their ditches beside the road are full of orange lilies. Beautiful! See a sign for Fort Wood Lake Recreation Area off to the left. Crossed Wet Glaize creek and there is a car parked down by the creek. Are they fishing? Yes, and the children are playing in the creek. Scattered patches of Missouri Snakeroot dot the roadside. On down to see the flag flying at Salt Box Antiques. Had a great visit with Wende and their store is looking really good! Got a good update! Stormy weather getting closer as we head out. Going back towards home, weather announcements sounding serious. Getting dark fast as the Toyota heads back towards the Beach. Lots of lightning, Darlin' and I got to see a flash of lightning, then a big blue ball as a transformer got struck by the lightning, electricity out now around here. Pouring rain seems to travel with us each trip this month as we head home the back way. Have a safe trip home. Don't forget the paddles!

6/23/99
Big, fat, black clouds as we head East on Hwy 54. Beautiful flowers and gardens as you drive towards Tuscumbia, MO population 148. Tuscumbia is the county seat for Miller County and Tuscumbia means "Warrior Who Kills". If you're out this way, stop and read the sign at the roadside park as you come into town. It's quite interesting. They also have a fishing access to the Osage River, so bring your fishing pole! We turned right onto Hwy 17 South and crossed the bridge over the Osage River. It's looking GOOD with rings the fishes have made in the water! The bluffs are many shades of green. Big round bales of hay are in a field on the right. Pink wild roses, orange trumpet vines and lots of butterflies out enjoying them, too. You'll see Mike's Hilltop Grocery on the right. Coming up on some traffic, several vehicles are behind a car flashing their emergency lights, they are following behind a tractor. Nice to slow down and enjoy the back way! Stay on Hwy 17 thru Iberia. There are wildflowers everywhere! Since we've gotten some good rains, it's a good year for the wildflowers. Yellow brown-eyed Susan's, white daisies, orange lilies and blue chicory are growing wild. Twisty turns on Hwy 17 makes it fun to drive. Turn left @ North 133 towards Dixon, population 1,585. Stopped down to see Vicki and Patti at Two Old Broads. These women are such a pleasure to visit with. They have revised their business this first year as many times as we revised their web site. We treasure their friendship. They are now a virtual store, 100% on the WWW. Add another W for WOW! Then down to see Michelle at Dream House Dolls. I'm simply amazed. Now there's Erica, Mindy, Ashley and Michelle and they are turning this into a first class place! The internet is bringing the world to them and everyone in the world seems to love Barbie Dolls. Do you have any hidden away in your attic or packed away in the basement? This is the place to visit! Amazing, we're so proud of Michelle! Got to play a little after all that work, found a new way out of town and found Madden Ford Conservation Area. Nice back roads and had a fun time traveling the back way home!

6/24/99
Cloudy out as we head West on Hwy 54. Now the sun is peeking through, it's a beautiful day out! 70's, breeze, what more can you ask for? The Osage River is way down today. It still seems strange to me that humans control this river instead of Mother Nature. It rises and falls a lot. But I sure do enjoy the electricity it generates. Thanks Osage! Took Hwy 5 North at the light at Camdenton. On up to Hwy 7, stopped at Kerr's Country Mart. It's a wonderful place! Have a good deli and bakery. Lunch break! Greenview is growing by leaps and bounds. Everyone is so friendly! And yes, they all got JCAD brochures! ha ha On up to Sunrise Beach to visit with Bill and Billie at S & W Bargain Spot. They have added so much stuff to their store! They are always buying estates. You never know what kind of stuff you'll find with each visit, and we always have a good time. They are ready to do more traveling, anyone interested in buying this going business? It has living quarters upstairs and you can buy it with or without the inventory. Right next door to the Post Office. Talk about eBay heaven! While doing their update, we found us a wonderful loveseat for our living room! It just fit in the Toyota! YEAH!! Happily, we head home the back way!

6/25/99
Up and at 'em early. Up to Eldon, Missouri to sign up a new store today! We met these folks yesterday. Their store is brand new, so come out and see them both at Maple Street Emporium. Beautiful out as we head West on Hwy 54. Lots of weekend traffic! Had a nice, quick visit with Sue at Bank Star One! Then on our way around the lake. Had a GREAT visit with Betty at Country Rose Antiques and Gifts. Handed out brochures to everyone and 3 out of 4 customers were on-line! Her store was so busy! That's wonderful! That's what we like to see! Come travel the back way and stop in and visit today! On down to get ready for a birthday party for a good friend, Happy 24th Little Ray! We had a GREAT time! See, you are on the web, too! Just without the picture! ha ha

6/28/99
Beautiful sunshine and HOT as we head West on Hwy 54. Bank and Post Office, then back East for us. Mowers have the grass mowed between East and West lanes of Hwy 54 and it looks really nice. Beautiful blue sky ahead. Puffy white clouds behind us. Sunshine in Etterville. A typical Missouri summer day, hot and muggy. Stopped by and had a GREAT visit with Clark and Diane at Hickory Hill Antiques. Stopped at all the stores on the way back, handing out many brochures! Such a nice day out, hope you get out and enjoy The Back Way.
